Saab . How to Remove Car ExhaustYour car exhaust may need replacement for increased engine performance or safety concerns. The specific make and model of your vehicle will determine your specific exhaust system design, though each car exhaust system does includes the same general components, including the exhaust manifold or headers, front piping, catalytic converter, resonator, muffler and tailpipe. Corrosion, age, punctures or dents can reduce system efficiency, in turn reducing engine power or fuel efficiency and increasing safety concerns due to carbon monoxide fumes leaking into the atmosphere or vehicle cabin. Removing and replacing exhaust components is a straightforward process. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Wrench Set Saw with blade made to cut metal Gloves Protective glasses Vehicle lift or jack stands Step by Step : 1 Lift the car high enough off the ground where you will be able to detach exhaust components easily. Use a hydraulic lift or tire jack and jack stands. Before sliding underneath the vehicle verify it is secure. 2 Unbolt the muffler assembly from the pipe leading into the catalytic converter or resonator using the socket and wrench set. A bolt flange will mate the muffler assembly into the next component. Your vehicle may have a resonator, which reduces noise in between the muffler and catalytic converter. 3 Locate the exhaust hanger locations holding the muffler assembly in place. Locate any other bolts holding the muffler assembly into the tailpipe or piping and remove. 4 Remove the muffler assembly and place it off to the side along with the corresponding fasteners, hangers and hardware. 5 Unbolt the chassis brace holding the pipe following the muffler assembly bolt flange, if applicable. 6 Remove any bolts mating the resonator piping and catalytic converter together. If there is not a resonator, unbolt the nuts mating the catalytic converter into the front pipe. 7 Unhook the separated exhaust piping from the corresponding exhaust hangers in systematic order from the rear towards the engine. Identify any hangers or flange bolts which may have been missed that are holding the components in place. Place the removed components off to the side with corresponding hardware. 8 Unbolt the front pipe from the bottom of the exhaust manifold flange if installing a full exhaust system. The front pipe leads up towards the engine bay. Remove the front pipe. 9 Open the hood and find the exhaust manifold. Bolts connect the exhaust manifold into the cylinder ports. Only remove this component when compromised or when replacing with a full system that includes new headers. Step by Step : 10 Unbolt the exhaust manifold from the engine block and remove. Be mindful of the gasket between the engine ports and the exhaust manifold. Step by Step : 11 Verify every component of the car exhaust has been removed. Tips & Warnings Work from the rear of the vehicle towards the front when removing exhaust components. Use protective glasses when underneath the car to minimize debris from falling into your eyes. Take pictures of the original exhaust layout and refer to these pictures during the reinstall process when needed. Rusted bolts or piping that will not come off may require cutting. Only cut if you have replacement components available. Do not remove an exhaust system until the vehicle is cold. Exhaust piping becomes very hot during use and will burn you. Saab . How to Install a Toyota Corolla's ExhaustThe first generation (1968-69) Toyota Corolla was the manufacture's smallest vehicle ever released in the United States at that time. The second generation Corolla became the second-best selling car in the world, as stated by Edmunds. As of December 2010, the Corolla is in its tenth generation. The eighth and tenth generation featured identical exhaust system designs, and installing an exhaust system for the 2001 to 2003 Toyota Corolla S 1.8-liter I-4 requires a vehicle lift, a socket wrench set, wrench set and saw with a blade capable of cutting metal. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Wrench set Saw with blade capable of cutting metal Gloves New exhaust system Jack stands or vehicle liftUninstalling Stock Exhaust Step by Step : 1 Lift the Corolla off the ground using a hydraulic lift or wheel jack and jack stands. Leave enough room underneath the vehicle to work on the exhaust system components efficiently. 2 Unbolt the muffler assembly from the swivel bolt flange located on the opposite end of the muffler from the tailpipe using the socket and wrench set. There will be two flange nuts mating the front pipe and muffler assembly piping together. 3 Lift the muffler assembly off the hanger hooks and pull it out from its mounted position. 4 Place the muffler assembly and all the corresponding hardware and insulators off to the side. Do not lose any of these components because they may be used during the exhaust replacement installation. 5 Unbolt the chassis brace, located underneath the front pipe. The front pipe is located after the resonator assembly. Remove the front pipe and place it off to the side along with all its hardware. 6 Remove the original resonator assembly if your new exhaust system includes a replacement resonator. In this case, cut the original resonator piping one to three inches in front of the weld melding the resonator assembly to the exhaust piping leading towards the engine. 7 Prepare to install the new exhaust. Installing New Exhaust Step by Step : 1 Install the front resonator assembly using the hardware and clamps provided by the new exhaust system after slipping it over the recently cut original piping. Install the new exhaust components from the front of the vehicle towards the rear. 2 Bolt the exhaust hangers in place starting with those that hold the resonator assembly. 3 Install the front pipe to the resonator assembly using the provided or stock hardware using the socket and wrench set. Reconnect the chassis brace. If applicable connect the front pipe to the necessary hangers. 4 Mount the muffler assembly. First connect and bolt the swivel bolt flange mentioned above using the two flange nuts. 5 Hang the muffler assembly on the hangers and tighten the remaining hardware. 6 Adjust the newly installed Corolla exhaust system as needed. Tighten hardware and fasteners from the front of the vehicle to the rear. 7 Lower vehicle back onto the ground. Tips & Warnings Make sure the Corolla is stable after lifting it off the ground before sliding underneath to remove exhaust components. Check the hardware has not loosened after driving with the new exhaust for 40 miles. Do not uninstall or install new exhaust components until the vehicle has cooled down. Exhaust piping becomes extremely hot during vehicle use. *nector to Spring connector attach the third clip to the #1 spark Plug- There are three ways to place the clip: • You can remove the boot from the spark plug, put the clip on the terminal end of the plug that sticks out of the engine, and replace the boot so that it fits snugly and allows the current to pass through from the wire to the plug (refer to Figure 12-45). • You can use a small metal spring or clip that fits over the terminal end of the plug, leaving a gap between the boot and the plug on which to clip the third clip from the timing light (refer to Figure 12-46). • If your #1 spark plug is hard to get at, you can attach the third clip to the distributor terminal tower where the wire from the #1 plug enters the distributor cap. Just trace the wire from the plug to the distributor, remove the boot from the distributor cap terminal, add a metal extension (usually supplied with the light), replace the boot, and clamp the clip to the extension (see Figure 12-47). 583

With your engine still shut off, try to pull up on your fan belt with one hand to tighten it, and turn the fan with the other hand to rotate the wheel that has the fan belt hooked around it (the lower wheel). This wheel, called the crankshaft pulley (or the harmonic balance wheel), probably has your timing marks on it (see Figures 12-48 and 12-49). On some vehicles, the timing marks are located elsewhere, so if you can't find yours on the crankshaft pulley, consult your owner's manual or service manual for their location, or call the service department at your dealership. If you can't move the fan by hand, remove the big wire from the center of your distributor cap and lay it on an unpainted metal part (not the car buretor!) to ground it. Then turn the key in the ignition to "bump" the starter without starting the engine. Doing so turns the crankshaft pulley, and as the pulley turns, a set of lines should come into view. These are your timing marks. A pointer attached to the engine block usually points to these marks. To set your timing, you have to get the pointer to point to the correct timing mark while the engine is running. Figures 12-48 and 12-49 show where the timing marks may be on your vehicle. Saab . Look at your spec sheet to see what your timing degree should be. The spec sheet (refer to Figure 12-1) will say something like "10°@550," which means that you want to line the pointer up with the 10° timing mark when the engine is idling at 550 rpm. The spec sheet may say something about BTDC or ATDC. This simply means that your timing marks will have a line labeled 0, with marks above and below it. The 0 is top dead center (TDC). Depending on the direction that the wheel rotates, the lines that come into view before the 0 (or TDC mark) are "before top dead center" (BTDC), and the ones that appear after TDC are "after top dead center" (ATDC). In case you're curi ous, "top dead center" is the point at which the piston reaches its highest point in the cylinder and compression is greatest. (How's that Saab .
